Traffic delays expected during today’s Olympian celebration

Today’s citywide celebration to welcome home South Shore’s three Olympians could cause traffic delays for unaware drivers, according to Caltrans.

Olympians Jamie Anderson, Hannah Teter and Maddie Bowman will be honored with a 14-mile procession starting at 1 p.m., followed by festivities at Sierra-at-Tahoe Ski Resort.

The parade will take the athletes from South Lake Tahoe High School onto Highway 50, past the airport and through the community of Meyers.

Because of the celebration, Caltrans is advising westbound motorists to expect delays on the highway during the procession. Eastbound drivers should expect heavier traffic also if the Sierra parking lot fills up early, which is anticipated.

Vehicles trying to get into Sierra for the celebration will be routed into Meyers once the parking lot fills ups, according to Caltrans. California Highway Patrol will assist with traffic control.

Attendees are encouraged to carpool early to the resort or use the free South Shore shuttle. Shuttle will start running at 10 a.m. with pickups until 2 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Airport, Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School and the Meyers Downtown Café.

Regular service stops will still be made at that time. Return service from Sierra-at-Tahoe will begin at 3:30 p.m. and continue throughout the afternoon.

This year, Anderson and Bowman won Olympic gold medals in snowboard slopestyle and freeski halfpipe, respectively. Teter placed fourth in snowboard halfpipe.

The athletes, who are all from Meyers and sponsored by Sierra, will be on board a fire truck during the procession and be cheered on by community members as they pass through town.

On Friday, Sierra spokesman Steve Hemphill expressed his excitement for the event.

“We’re celebrating the fantastic success and homecoming of our Golden Girls, Maddie Bowman, Hannah Teter and Jamie Anderson!” he said in an email. “Sierra Resort, Meyers and South Lake Tahoe could not be more proud of these incredible athletes and ambassadors.”
