Four arrested in Tahoe alcohol sting

A “Shoulder Tap” operation targeting adults who agreed to buy alcohol for minors resulted in four arrests last weekend in South Lake Tahoe.

Across California, agents from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and officers from 109 police and sheriff’s departments joined forces in the largest shoulder tap operation in state history.

In the operation, minors under direct supervision of a police officer stood outside a store asking adults to buy alcohol and telling adults they are underage. Adults who agreed to buy the alcohol were arrested and cited for furnishing alcohol to a minor, punishable by a minimum fine of $1,000 and 24 hours community service.

South Lake Tahoe Police participated in the operation with funding from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control’s grant assistance program.

Four people were arrested in South Lake Tahoe: Stevie Smith, 23, of Pasadena; Harvey Hampton, 58 of South Lake Tahoe; Charles Kerr, 72,of South Lake Tahoe; and Hamza Salmi, 32, of San Francisco.

Statewide, 522 people were arrested and cited. Offenses included furnishing alcohol to a minor, drunken driving, possession of illegal drugs, false identification, open container in public, public drunkenness, parole violations and outstanding warrants.
