Black Star Safari debuts ‘Cut & Dry’

South Shore musicians Dan Green and Matt Mandella have been on safari for about a year and recently bagged their first big game, a five-song EP entitled “Cut & Dry.”

The duo, better known as Black Star Safari, will hold a release party for album at South Lake Tahoe’s Himmel Haus Saturday.

It’s a familiar location for the pair. During a January performance opening for San Diego’s Vokab Kompany at the German restaurant Green (guitar, vocals) and Mandella (drums) had a small crowd in full fist-pumping mode. During a Tuesday interview, Green said Mandella and he were able to capture the band’s live energy on “Cut & Dry.”

“I’m pretty stoked on that,” the guitarist said. Green is a veteran of South Shore acts including Waiting for T.I.M. and Adient Zoo. He met Mandella at Musicians Institute in Los Angeles around 2012 and formed Black Star Safari about a year ago.

In recording the album the pair went with stripped-down production, playing live and going “straight at it,” Green said. “Cut & Dry” blends jam, folk and rock, although Green and Mandella aren’t terribly concerned with genres. The EP includes five songs, from the swinging “Best of Luck” to the creeping, bluesy “Frying Pan” to the guitar-driven “Signs,” the heaviest of the five tracks.

Black Star Safari has spent recent weeks touring out of the area, with a particularly lively show at Chico’s Crazy Horse Saloon & Brewery, Green said.

Saturday’s show is $10 at the door, with the entry price including a copy of “Cut & Dry.”

South Shore’s Two Bottle Music and Big Sticky Mess, from Davis, Calif., open the show.

The Himmel Haus is located at 3819 Saddle Road in South Lake Tahoe.
