Reno-Tahoe Odyssey and America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride return to Lake Tahoe

Runners and cyclists will take to the streets surrounding Lake Tahoe and Truckee en masse this weekend, when two popular Sierra Nevada events return.

The 10th annual Reno-Tahoe Odyssey begins in downtown Reno Friday morning and includes Truckee, Tahoe City, Homewood and South Lake Tahoe along its 178-mile route, which also winds through Carson City and Virginia City. More than two hundred teams of 12 will run around the clock to complete the 10th annual race, which is divided into 36 legs and lasts into Saturday.

Bicyclists get into the action early Sunday morning, when the 23rd annual America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride launches from MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa .

The 72-mile ride includes about 3,500 cyclists circling Lake Tahoe clockwise along area roadways.

“It includes a challenging 800 foot climb to a rest stop overlooking Emerald Bay and a 1,000 foot climb to Spooner Junction. There are also many short rolling ascents and descents totaling over 4,024 vertical feet of elevation gain,” according to the race description.

Northbound State Route 89 (Emerald Bay Road) will be closed from 6:30-8:30 a.m. except for registered participants of the bike ride. The remaining roads used for the event will remain open to public traffic.

The ride is nearly sold out, according to recent social media posts from organizers. A limited number of on-site registration spots may be available the morning of the race.
