Wooden boats gather for ‘Freedom of the Forties’ at South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic

More than 80 classic, wooden boats will be on display at the South Shore this week as part the South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic.

This year’s event features a theme of “Freedom of the Forties” and pays homage to the U.S. military and classic boats of the 1940s, according to event organizers.

“We made a very conscious choice in our sponsorship of the South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic this summer. This is the premier classic wooden boat event of South Lake Tahoe, featuring superior philanthropic aspects,” said Peter Strand, president of Sierra Sotheby’s International Realty, in a statement. “This event is truly about giving back to the Lake Tahoe community and the Antique and Classic Boat Society (ACBS) in order to preserve antique and classic boat heritage for many years to come. There is a great deal of passion tied into this event, and it is an honor to contribute our support.”

The event takes place from 12-5 p.m. Friday, July 25 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 26 at the Tahoe Keys Marina, located at 2435 Venice Drive East in South Lake Tahoe. Tickets are available for $22. Children under 12 are free.

The event began in the early 1990s but took a three-year hiatus during the recession before returning in 2008, according to organizers.

“There is nothing quite like rich mahogany reflecting off of the pure blue waters of Lake Tahoe,” according to the statement. “Music, wine, food, vendors and more than 85+ of the world’s rarest boats bring together the fascinating and priceless history behind these elegant machines.”
