A major pavement reconstruction project on Kingsbury Grade is making progress this summer with the recent completion of roadwork on the bottom, commercial section near U.S. 50.
Since the project began in May, nearly 7,000 cubic yards of old road has been excavated and 10,300 tons of new asphalt has been placed on almost one and a half miles of reconstructed roadway.
Another 1,400 linear feet of storm drainpipe has been installed as one portion of drainage enhancements to improve roadside drainage and Tahoe basin water quality, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.
The most recent advancement in the $15 million NDOT project involved the completion of road reconstruction and paving work from the bottom of the highway on the lake side to Pine Ridge Drive.
Roadside work — such as signage, utility and drainage improvements — will continue with single lane closures and delays of up to 30 minutes during overnight hours through August, NDOT reported Tuesday.
But as far as motorists are concerned, the next big traffic delays will arrive when Kingsbury Grade closes to through traffic Sept. 2.
The highway will be closed just east of Tramway Drive for the second time this year. It was closed for about a month leading up to Memorial Day as a result of construction.
During the September closure, which will be in place until October, non-permitted vehicles will not be able to travel over the Kingsbury summit between Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley.
Residences and businesses on Kingsbury, however, will still be accessible by U.S. 50.
Ultimately, the project will help prevent continuing pavement deterioration from natural springs below the highway and make safety, curb, gutter, drainage, sidewalk, lighting and other improvements on Kingsbury west of Daggett Summit.
