Tour de Tahoe to circle the Jewel of the Sierra

Hundreds of bicyclists will hit the highways around Lake Tahoe this weekend for the 12th annual Tour de Tahoe - Bike Big Blue.

The Sunday ride includes a 72-mile, clockwise trip around the lake.

“It includes a challenging 800-foot climb to a rest stop overlooking Emerald Bay and a 1,000-foot climb to Spooner Junction,” according to organizers. “There are also many short rolling ascents and descents totaling over 4,024 vertical feet of elevation gain! The altitude ranges between 6,300 feet and 7,100 feet above sea level and the ride is recommended for conditioned recreational bicyclists, not for beginners.”

Tour de Tahoe begins and ends at South Shore’s MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa. The first wave of bicyclists is set to depart starting at 6:30 a.m.

Online registration for the event is closed. Late/same-day registration will be offered from 12-8 p.m. Saturday at Tahoe Sports Ltd., at 4000 Lake Tahoe Blvd in South Lake Tahoe, and from 5:30-7:30 a.m. Sunday at MontBleu. Registration is $125 plus a $20 late fee.

“This is your chance to ride around Lake Tahoe at Summer’s end offering fresh mountain air, incredible scenic beauty, great food & entertainment and managed and supported by one of the most experienced bicycle event management teams in the West,” according to organizers.
