HOMEWOOD, Calif. — Homewood Mountain Resort has become the latest downhill ski area in the Sierra Nevada to feel the effects of a winter that has yet to yield much in terms of snowfall.

Near the end of last month, Homewood announced it would place upper mountain operations on hold until further notice. On Monday, the West Shore resort updated the announcement, saying it would suspend all operations until snow conditions improved.

“Due to recent warm temperatures and a lack of natural snowfall, all Homewood Mountain Resort operations will be on hold as we patiently await the return of snowmaking temperatures, natural snowfall, or a combination thereof,” according to the announcement. “Rest assured our Mountain Operations team is on standby and we look to reopen the mountain as soon as conditions permit. Thank you for your patience – think snow!”

Donner Ski Ranch, near Lake Tahoe’s North Shore, halted operations Jan. 25 until the area received more snow. Several other Sierra Nevada ski resorts outside of the Lake Tahoe area have also been forced to, at least temporarily, close due to the lack of snowfall.

A snow survey near Echo Summit, at the South Shore, last week found the snowpack contained 12 percent of the typical water content for this time of year. Statewide, the water content of the Sierra Nevada snowpack is at 25 percent of the long-term average, according to information form the California Department of Water Resources.

There may be some relief on the way.

Wet weather systems are expected to make there way into the Lake Tahoe area Friday and last through Monday. Whether the precipitation arrives as rain or snow remains to be seen, as snow levels are expected to fluctuate during the events.
