Tahoe inmates win at county fair

Tribune staff report

Inmates in South Lake Tahoe Jail’s culinary program capped another year of cuisine skills when they won 17 awards at the El Dorado County Fair this year, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.

“They received 10 first place and seven second place ribbons,” the EDCSO said in the press release. “The inmates leave the ribbons at the jail to be displayed down the kitchen hall for all future inmates to see.

El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office formed a partnership with Lake Tahoe Community College in 2007 to help inmates learn usable job skills and later expanded the program to the county jail in Placerville.

Over the past 11 years the culinary program has won three best in shows, 51 first-place awards, 47 second-place awards and 13 third-place awards for a total of 114 ribbons.

According to EDCSO, inmates enrolled in the culinary program earn 100 to 500 hours of instruction, or three to 14 college credits.

“The inmates that take this to heart are the ones that seem to make it on their own when released. Over the years we have had inmates graduate with a degree from the college. One has gone onto culinary school and is now an executive chef at a restaurant,” according to EDCSO.
