Letter to the editor: Thanks to the City Council for its stance on the loop road project

Thanks to the City Council for its stance on the loop road project

At its March 12 special meeting, the South Lake Tahoe City Council heard a report on the Loop Road Project by Tahoe Transportation District Consultants EPS, and they heard testimony from a lot of people on the topic. The principle concern of opponents of the Loop Road has been and remains government using eminent domain to make it so.

After listening to the TTD consultant report and many speakers, the City Council agreed to recommend to TTD that it continue examining Loop Road alignment options and pursue millions of federal dollars to improve South Shore infrastructure. The City Council as a whole wants more information regarding the benefit and impact of any alignment for a Loop Road on the city residents, city businesses, and city property owners. Most importantly, Mayor Tom Davis reiterated the City Council’s existing policy of not using its power of eminent domain to take private property to build any of these improvements. TTD will have to use the art of persuasion to come up with a road plan that respects private property and resident rights in the city limits.

Opponents of the much-touted Loop Road want economic progress in the South Shore and city limits for big and small businesses and for the people who reside here. “No one wins unless everybody wins.”

Thank you Mayor Davis and Council members!
