Sierra Nevada Dance to perform Swan Lake at Tahoe

TAHOE, Calif. — Performing is a family affair for the Garcias, which is fitting since that is how Laura and Ricardo first met. It was 18 years ago at a college Songfest where the longtime dancer met her future husband, who had been active in drama throughout high school and college. Fast forward a few years and the couple, along with daughter Olive and son Amadeo, attended Sierra Nevada Dance’s production of “The Little Mermaid.” They all loved it, and with some encouragement from SND Artistic Director Sherrie Peterson, Laura, Ricardo, and Olive found themselves on the stage for 2012’s “Peter Pan: A Neverland Ballet.”

Now the family is back on stage again, appearing in “Swan Lake.” Ricardo, who has left the world of finance to attend nursing school, will play the dark Von Rothbart, while Laura, a physical therapist by day, takes on the role of the Queen. Olive, age 5, stars as a Flower Girl, giving herself great experience for becoming the ballerina she hopes to be when she grows up. Meanwhile, 3-year-old Amadeo will cheer the family on as an audience member. The whole family agrees dancing together is a wonderful experience, and Laura especially appreciates the inclusiveness of dancing with Sherrie at SND. “It’s so warm and welcoming. Everyone gets to dance. I’m so glad to be back dancing after all these years.”

See the Garcia family and other talented local dancers at SND’s production of “Swan Lake” at the Cal-Neva Resort, April 12-14.

Sierra Nevada Dance will present the classical ballet, featuring 100 local dancers ranging in age from 4 years to adult at the Cal-Neva Resort in the historic Frank Sinatra Celebrity Showroom on April 12, 13, and 14. Friday and Saturday shows are at 7 p.m., Sunday matinee is at 3 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults and $10 for seniors/students, with $3 additional at the door. Advance tickets are available at Sierra Nevada Dance, 530-582-1894, and The Bookshelf’s new location in the Westgate Center on Donner Pass Road in Truckee, 530-582-0515.
