Truckee at Incline baseball | Wolverines score 32 in doubleheader sweep

Truckee couldn’t have asked for a better start to its Mount Rose League baseball schedule.

The Wolverines outscored Incline 32-3 in the opening league doubleheader at Governor’s Field in Carson City on Saturday, winning the first game 16-1 and the second game 16-2.

Incline sophomore Tommy Dolan started Game 1 and immediately ran into control issues that persisted for his two and one-third innings. Truckee capitalized, scoring five runs in the first inning on eight walks to take early control.

The Wolverines added another four runs in the third, five in the fourth and two in the fifth to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Senior Erik Holmer started for the Wolverines. He allowed one run on two hits and a walk in four innings, while striking out four. Ty Vaio pitched a scoreless inning in relief, striking out two.

Cam Powell and Jack Clouthier delivered the Highlanders’ only hits, while Kris Dirga scored their one run in the fourth inning. Tommy Thompson and Dirga pitched in relief.

Despite the high run total, the Wolverines managed only six hits in the game — one apiece by Andy McKechnie, Aaron Pado, Jackson Rohlf and Holmer, and two by Thor Retzlaff.

Rohlf’s one hit was a bases-clearing double during Truckee’s four-run third inning. McKechnie and Holmer each drove in three runs, while Chris Towle, Travis Ferre, Pado and Retzlaff contributed an RBI apiece.

In Game 2, Truckee matched Incline’s one run in the first inning. But it was all Wolverines from there as they scored three times in the second inning, eight more in the third and four in the fifth to again end the game on the 10-run rule. Incline committed seven errors to contribute to the lopsided margin.

McKechnie started and gave up one run in three innings on two hits and a walk. The senior right-hander helped his cause by leading off the third inning with a solo home run to left to spark the eight-run rally. He finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Truckee had 16 hits in all, with Towle going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Vaio and Holmer each had two hits, while Riley Guiragossian, Bradley VanSchoonhoven, Ferre, Rohlf and Retzlaff each had one hit. Holmer contributed two RBIs.

The Highlanders finished with three hits — doubles by Powell and Clouthier and a single by Dirga. Clouthier and Masxsimo pitched for Incline.

Truckee improved to 5-6 overall after winning five of its last six games. Incline is 5-4-1 overall.

Incline is scheduled to play at Virginia City on Tuesday before entering a Division III crossover tournament against West Wendover, Battle Mountain and White Pine of the Ruby Mountain League at Battle Mountain on Friday and Saturday. Truckee will play Division IA crossover games against the Ruby Mountain League on Friday and Saturday.
