Vacation checks can help keep your home safe

Many folks don’t know of a program available in El Dorado County called vacation checks.

When a resident requests a vacation check, regular STAR patrols visit the property and check to make sure the doors and windows of the property are secure, that there are no indications of wild animal intrusion and the property, itself, appears secure.

There is no charge for the service, although most folks using the service send a donation to the STAR organization as a thank you. The checks are arranged by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department and performed by the Sheriff’s Department auxiliary volunteers.

If you are leaving your home for a period longer than the non-occupancy time allowed by your insurance policy, the vacation check will help establish that the property is not abandoned.

Talk with your insurance agent about the rules governing your property.

S.T.A.R.s are volunteers provide an extra set of eyes and ears and performing other duties when called upon to help keep the citizens of El Dorado County safe. Anyone age 50 or older may assist the Sheriff’s Department by becoming a STAR.
