Letter to the editor: Construction continues on Highway 89

I’m writing regarding the meeting held on March 20 concerning the future of Highway 89 from Tahoma to Tahoe City. To my understanding from the meeting, there will be constant road work for the next five summers or so. This is a big problem for area businesses because this road work is occurring during peak business hours and days. Five years of this work will affect most, if not all, of these businesses in a negative manner. Based on the plan given to us, Southwest Gas will be continuing its project with an estimated completion date set for summer 2014. Then Caltrans will be moving in and starting road widening and drainage project set for 2014-17. From my perspective, work efficiency seems to be pretty low. If Caltrans and Southwest Gas worked together, road work could be completed sooner and have less of a negative impact on local business. As it is now, businesses will be severely impacted financially or worse — having to close their doors forever.
