Washoe County CAB program coming back in smaller scale

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Washoe County is looking for local volunteers to serve on its rejuvenated Citizen Advisory Board program.

The seven-seat Incline Village/Crystal Bay board is one of nine new CABs which represent the five commissioner districts of Washoe County. Last month, the county commission approved the new format. Tuesday, commissioners OK’d an updated approach to appointing new members to the boards.

Members will be asked to study and advise their district’s commissioner on local issues, including regulations that guide building and planning for neighborhoods and development, public safety, roads and other areas. Applicants will be selected by the county commission in July.

“The bottom line is people really want to connect with their commissioner, and that’s No. 1 most important feature of the CAB program,” county spokeswoman Nancy Leuenhagen said Wednesday when asked about the program’s importance. “Citizens really value the advisory portion of this program. It keeps that connection to our neighborhoods.”

The Incline CAB will meet four times a year, along with an annual special meeting. Dates and times will be determined in mid-June.

The 71 new members must reside within their CAB boundaries and be registered voters in Washoe County. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Friday, June 28.

The CAB program was created in 1976 to provide the county’s various governing boards with a better idea of a community’s stance on proposed policies and regulations.

According to previous reports, dwindling community interest and opportunities to cut costs and modernize certain processes led to the CAB program being suspended last summer. Before folding, the county had 14 active CABs, each with five to nine members.

The new format will be more efficient and cost lest to oversee, Leuenhagen said.
