Officials close Tahoe rec center pool after vandalism

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The Incline Village Recreation Center pool will be closed for a week after it was damaged in an apparent vandalism incident Monday night.

An unknown suspect threw a rock through a double-pane glass window on the building’s east side, said Andrew Baird, marketing manager for the Incline Village General Improvement District.

“The rock itself and shattered glass from the window entered the pool, necessitating a complete drain of the water per Washoe County health code,” Baird said Tuesday morning. “Once the pool has been sufficiently cleaned, it will be re-filled, chemicals will be re-introduced and the water subsequently tested to make sure that it is safe for public use.”

Roughly 226,000 gallons of water will be drained from the 25-yard-long, 8-lane pool, Baird said. IVGID hopes to reopen it on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

An estimated cost of damages was unknown early Tuesday afternoon.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

“It was about a softball-sized rock,” said Bob Harmon, WCSO public information officer. “We have an active vandalism investigation and would strongly urge anybody with any information to give us a call.”

Residents can call the sheriff’s office at 775-785-WCSO (9276) or Secret Witness at 775-322-4900.

During the pool’s closure, recreation center members may use the outdoor pool at Burnt Cedar Beach, with or without a beach access card. Further, some swimming lessons and classes will be moved to the Burnt Cedar pool, Baird said.

Aquatic fitness classes at the recreation center pool will be canceled Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week, Baird said.

“There are simply too many participants in these programs for the Burnt Cedar pool to accommodate with a quality experience,” Baird said.

Residents with questions can call the recreation center at 775-832-1300.
