Sierra Nevada Alliance turns 20 years old

The Sierra Nevada Alliance, the organization that has united the Sierra Nevada’s most prominent conservation groups, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

In honor of the occasion, the Alliance is holding a weekend-long series of workshops, speeches and nature tours.

“This year marks the Sierra Nevada Alliance’s 20th anniversary, and we are celebrating all our great work protecting and restoring the Sierra at this year’s conference,” executive director Joan Clayburgh in a statement said. “We are excited to have presentations and book signings with renowned environmental leaders Bill McKibben and Jack Laws, and that’s just the beginning of what’s sure to be our biggest and best conference ever.”

The Sierra Nevada Alliance is an umbrella organization for conservation groups throughout the Sierra Nevada. It has more than 85 member groups. The Alliance’s mission is to “protect and restore the natural environment of the Sierra Nevada for future generations, while ensuring healthy and sustainable communities.

Headquartered in South Lake Tahoe, the Alliance has long had impacts on the environmental issues facing the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The Alliance helped create a partnership with Americorps to place staff in many of the member groups, resulting in thousands of volunteers being recruited and over a 100,000 people being educated about conservation issues.

“It’s a really cool program,” Clayburgh said.

The League to Save Lake Tahoe, Friends of Hope Valley, Friends of the West Shore, Incorporate Olympic Valley, Lake Tahoe Water Trail, Sustainable Tahoe, Tahoe Institute for Natural Science, Tahoe Tallac Association, Tahoe Baikal Institute and the Truckee River Watershed Council are all among the Alliance’s member groups.
