Galena edges Vikings on tennis court

South Tahoe brought its A game, but then so did Galena.

Both the girls and boys tennis teams fought to the final round, but in the end, Galena edged the Vikings. The girls dropped their home match 8-10, the boys 5-13 on the road on Thursday.

Tied until bitter end

The South Tahoe and Galena girls tennis teams were neck-and-neck after two rounds.

South Tahoe had racked up three points in the first round between singles player Maggie Lee and doubles players Natalie Allen, Catherine Baghdikian, Ashley Tarwater and Kayla Lyons. Trouble was, Galena racked up three points too.

The two teams were now in a 3-3 standstill heading into Round 2, and the battle continued.

On the singles front, Lee and Kylee Lyons each won their second games to pick up another two points. Allen and Baghdikian also won their second doubles match to bring South Tahoe’s total to six points. But Galena posted another three points again to rein in the Vikings’ success.

The match was now tied 6-6 as the teams headed into the final round.

Lee picked up a resound 6-0 third win. Doubles team Sarah Jobbins and Grace Bronken stepped up for a 6-2 win, and singles players Lissie Stewart and Kylee Lyons charged around the court in hard-fought matches.

But in the end, Galena edged the Vikings by two. The South Tahoe girls are now 2-1 in league.

Boys battle

Freshman Louie Marin got the Vikings started with a hard-fought 7-6 singles win in the first round. Doubles team Ryan Piazzo and Trevor Garon added a 6-1 doubles win, but Galena had built a 4-2 lead by the end of the first round.

The Vikings continued to battle.

Senior Chad Kaassamani picked up a 6-1 win in the second round, and a 7-6 tiebreaker in the third. Piazzo and Garon added a final 6-2 win as well, but Galena had pulled out of reach 9-3 by that point. The boys are now 2-1 in league.

ON TUESDAY: the girls lost a non-league match to Bishop Manogue 7-11, and the boys lost their non-league match 1-17.

NEXT HOME GAMES: The boys will host Carson at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at South Tahoe High School. The girls will host Douglas at 3 p.m. on Thursday at South Tahoe High School.
