The plastic bag ban for grocers and food vendors begins today.
The plastic bag ban was passed in October with a 3-2 vote. In December, South Lake Tahoe City Council agreed to not impose any fines for violations in the first three months. Affected businesses will be given written warnings, educated about the city ban and possibly even helped to comply in some fashion.
The ban will take effect Oct. 15 for other retail businesses.
Following the three-month grace period, per-day fines for second violations will be $50 as opposed to the $100 initially proposed.
