Dry weather spell expected to continue

South Lake Tahoe received some much-needed snow on Saturday, although it might be hard to tell now.

Most of what little snow the area did receive seems to have melted, leaving most roads dry by Monday.

If forecasters are correct, the latest batch of snow will be the last people see in a while — or at least over the next five days.

“Nothing significant on the horizon,” National Weather Service forecaster Jessica Kielhorn said of the ongoing sunny and dry weather Tuesday.

Lake Tahoe will continue to see the trend of dry weather in the foreseeable future, as portions of the area — such as Tahoe City — experience the driest winter on record, she said.

The exact amount of snowfall and precipitation are unknown in South Lake Tahoe, specifically, because records in the area are not reported consistently, according to Kielhorn. However, the amount of water Tahoe City has received this season is significantly below the average.

Tahoe City receives an average of 16.81 inches of water from snow and rain. This season, which started in October, the region has acquired 2.5 inches.

Lake Tahoe, in general, has received 34 percent of its median snowpack this season, according to the National Weather Service, Reno, website.

Still, many people — including those at the ski resorts — seemed to appreciate the snow Mother Nature did provide Saturday.

Sierra-at-Tahoe Ski Resort was thankful for two inches of natural snow on the mountain that seem to be holding up well under cooler nighttime temperatures, spokesman Steven Hemphill said.

“(We were) definitely excited to get that fresh blanket of snow,” he said.

Heavenly also reported 2 to 3 inches of snow.

Low temperatures are expected to remain in the lower 20s at night for the rest of the week, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasted high temperatures show sunny weather with temperatures above 50 degrees through Saturday.
