Angora Benefit Concert and other events scheduled today

— The Angora Benefit Concert to mark the one-year anniversary of the Angora fire will take place today at the Horizon Casino Resort Outdoor Concert Center from noon to 10 p.m.

Eight bands will perform in addition to headliners Elvin Bishop and the Johnny Vernazza Band. Tickets cost $20.

— In part to recognize the one-year anniversary of the Angora fire, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors will meet at 9 a.m. today at Lake Tahoe Golf Course and also visit the fire area.

On the agenda for the 9 a.m. meeting is a presentation proclaiming Sept. 20 as Sgt. Timothy Michael Smith Day in El Dorado County.

Smith, an Army sergeant and South Lake Tahoe native, was killed in the line of duty in Iraq on April 7.

— The El Dorado County animal shelter is holding a grand-opening celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, after its remodel and expansion.

County supervisors will be on hand for a ribbon-cutting at 1 p.m. The shelter is at 1121 Shakori Drive in Meyers.

— At 2 p.m., county supervisors will gather at the home of Stan Freeman at 607 Pyramid Court to present certificates of appreciation to fire responders. A tree-planting ceremony also will take place.

Freeman and his wife, Diana, were among the first people who lost homes in the Angora fire to move back into the area.
