Bike expo for kids offers safety skills and fun
June 3, 2010
A free bike rodeo and safety check for children is set for 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Ski Run Marina as part of the Tahoe Bike Parade and Festival.
The California Highway Patrol will administer the rodeo and safety checks The course will help kids learn to read and respond to directional signs, stop and navigate through turns to help improve their bike-handling skills and begin understanding the rules of the road. For kids without bikes, Natural Riders of Truckee, a bicycle education company for kids, will make them available for rodeo.
The safety check is a chance to have kids’ bicycles checked by a professional mechanic to assess the condition of the bike. If maintenance is needed, it will be provided onsite. For repairs that require more attention and equipment than is available at the safety check, the mechanic will identify the problem and share it with the parents.
Also from 9 a.m. to noon is the “Decorate Your Bike Booth” by the South Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club. Materials and youth leaders will be on hand to assist kids in decorating their bikes in preparation for the Bike Parade starting at 12:30 p.m. at the entrance of Ski Run Marina.
The Bike Parade is an easy 2.2 mile loop traveling eastbound on Highway 50, turning right on Pioneer Trail, right on to Ski Run Boulevard and back to Ski Run Marina for the Bike Festival.
The Tahoe Bike Day Parade and Festival is produced by the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition, a nonprofit corporation promoting livable and sustainable communities through bicycling.
