Burning desire

An utterly unique wave of sound is rolling through South Shore.

LYNX and Janover, a duet of completely innovative music, is headlining Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Bar 24 Tap Room and Grill inside Bill’s Casino.

LYNX and Janover’s play a diverse musical blend of prerecorded tracks, live instruments and vocals.

“It’s a pretty diverse blend of hip-hip, down-tempo, dub-step electronica, but with folk singing, beatboxing and some unique instruments,” Janover said.

“Unique instruments” is an understatement. Janover is the innovator of integrating the hammered dulcimer in electronica.

“A string percussion instrument used in a more classical sense, an ancient instrument, that came from the Middle East,” said Janover, who won the 2002 National Hammered Dulcimer Championship.

LYNX plays acoustic guitar and beatboxes.

“She is an ‘amhhaaazing’ beatboxer,” said Janover.

Her beatboxing is what brought the duo together. LYNX used to sit in and beatbox for Janover’s other band, Zilla.

A few recording sessions later, the LYNX and Janover project just kind of organically formed. That was a year and a half ago, and there are no plans to stop, Janover said.

The duo is no stranger to Tahoe. They teamed up last year with Paesano Productions for the South Lake Tahoe Earth Day Festival. They’re teaming up again with Paesano at Bar 24.

“LYNX and Janover played the biggest festivals this summer: Earthdance, Rothbury, Burning Man, Symbiosis,” said Nick Catanella, president of Paesano Productions.

In between festival gigs, they managed to squeeze out their first record together.

“They just released a brand new album (“Between Worlds”) co-produced by a new artist on every track,” said Catanella.

LYNX and Janover get their inspirations from various musicians and places, including Ani DiFranco, DJ Bluetech, DJ Tipper, and the overall music and vibes of Burning Man. For those looking for a second taste of “the Man.”

SOM FREQ of MO2 is opening for LYNX and Janover, Nov. 11. Special guest and friend of LYNX and Janover, Sasha “Butterfly” Rose, is also playing. Doors open at 8 p.m. The show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $8 before the event and are available through http://www.paesanoproductions.com. Prices are $12 at the door.
