Cancer survivors will climb to top
March 4, 2003
In July 2003 a team of 48 breast cancer survivors and supporters of the Breast Cancer Fund will ascend Mt. Shasta to help make their vision of breast cancer prevention a reality. They will challenge the 14,162-foot mountain in an effort to assist in the funding of research and prevention of the epidemic that now affects one in every eight women. The climbers are committed to the Breast Cancer Fund’s mission to identify and eliminate the environmental and other preventable causes of the disease. This pledge carried with it a great deal of responsibility including raising the research funds necessary to achieve this goal.
South Tahoe resident Linda Kaczmar has been selected as one of a 12-member team who will participate in the “Climb Against the Odds — Mt. Shasta.” The five-year breast cancer survivor is dedicating her climb to the women and men in the Lake Tahoe Basin and Northern Nevada who are now and have been challenged with this disease. She has set a personal fund-raising goal of $10,000 for the Breast Cancer Fund. To aid in this endeavor an educational fund-raising event is scheduled at 6 p.m. April 5 at the Lake Tahoe Community College Theater.
The event will feature a documentary of inspirational stories about men and women who have previously taken on this challenge. After the film, information about breast cancer will be available at a wine and cheese reception which will take place in the lobby of the LTCC theater. A silent auction also is planned. Admission to the event is $10. For tickets and more information call Judy Jensen at ( 530) 577-4272.
