Celestino Alfafara

A memorial service will take place Wednesday for Celestino “Cel” Alfafara, who died March 29, 2005, at Barton Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was 71.

Cel was born Feb. 24, 1934, at San Francisco, and graduated from St. Ignatius. A civil engineer, he was an environmental specialist with CalTrans until his retirement. He had been a resident of South Lake Tahoe since 1999, and was a member of the Sheriff’s Team of Active Retirees for six years and served as treasurer. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge, Goldiggers RV Club, and St. Theresa Catholic Church, and was a driver for the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League. Cel loved the mountains and the snow. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Maria “Tusa” Alfafara of South Lake Tahoe; daughters and sons-in-law, Cecilia and Ed Hartley of Clayton, Calif., and Jennifer and Gary Skarphol of Aliso Viejo, Calif.; daughter, Mitzy Gordon of Concord, Calif., and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Theresa Catholic Church, South Lake Tahoe. Mass will be celebrated Saturday at St. Mathews Catholic Church in San Mateo, Calif., followed by inurnment at Holy Cross Cemetery.
