Conference center opens in center of town

Susan Wood, Tribune staff writer

The Inn by the Lake staff has gotten into a new line of work.

In addition to operating a hotel on Highway 50, General Manager Cathy Colbert plans to host its first event March 18 at the new wedding and conference center where the Pizza Hut once was.

The 3,850-square-foot facility will house three meeting rooms, two of which may be opened into one large room.

“We’re excited. We felt we got enough requests to open one. We had to turn people away. Now we can keep them at the inn,” she said Friday, opening the blinds to a panoramic lake view in the room of the same name. “It’s the view that sells everybody.”

Colbert said she expects the location to be a prime reason people book the facility, which comes with computer business hookups and a modular kitchen for catering to groups of up to 100.

Anchored by the Lake View and Sierra rooms, Colbert anticipates functions to include weddings, receptions, rehearsal dinners and other gatherings. Many parties have expressed interest in getting married across the street at El Dorado Beach.

“I feel like we’re proud parents — that’s it’s been an entire nine-month process,” Colbert said, adding the $400,000 remodel has required baby steps on the hotel’s part. “That’s why we’re taking it slowly.”

The wedding and conference center structure was designed by South Shore architect Alan Tolhurst, with the idea of maximizing the open space with 10-foot high ceilings.

Inside, Interior Motives of South Lake Tahoe used earth tones that will be able to blend with a variety of wedding color schemes, Colbert added.

A ribbon cutting and opening party will be March 20 at 5:30 p.m. at 3300 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
