While Douglas County didn’t crack its previous election turnout record, it did have the highest percentage of voters cast a ballot in the state during the 2012 election, according to the Nevada Secretary of State’s Office.

According to figures released this morning, the county had a 91.61 percent turnout, with 8,802 votes on Election Day. That’s far fewer than the 13,784 early voters and 3,514 absentee ballots, which represented more than 60 percent of the electorate.

Douglas County Clerk Treasurer Ted Thran said voting was brisk early on Tuesday but wound down as the day progressed.

Voter turnout statewide was 80.56 percent.

The second highest turnout in the state was Humboldt County’s with 91.39 percent, followed by Carson City’s 90.74 percent.

The counties hardest hit by the recession, Lyon and Nye, had among the lowest turnouts in the state. Only 68.82 percent of Nye County voters voted in the election while Lyon County had 73.83 percent turnout. Lyon County led the state in unemployment with Nye typically coming in second over the last three years.

Douglas County posted record voter turnouts in 2004 and again in 2008. The 2004 election, which saw the re-election of George W. Bush, saw 92.04 percent of the county’s active voters cast a ballot. In 2008, 92.31 percent of voters participated.
