Visitors to Squaw Valley this weekend will have the opportunity to dance, craft and soak up the sun while learning about the environment.

The long-running Tahoe Truckee Earth Day celebration returns Saturday and is expected to attract about 3,000 people to The Village at Squaw Valley, said volunteer Stephen Addison.

The event combines good times with information about the local environment.

"We have a large variety of booths on display then we bring it together with live music all day," Addison said.

Thick Newton will bring its original funk and rock sounds to the Events Plaza Stage from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Earles of Newtown follow up with a performance from 3:30-5 p.m. The group plays everything form Dixieland jazz to ragtime to blues to country swing.

In between the musical performances, the crowd-favorite "Trashion Show" is set to return at 2:15 p.m. Saturday. The show includes students from Truckee High School displaying homemade outfits created from discarded materials, everything from light bulbs to Clif Bar wrappers. Each outfit is designed to teach the audience a lesson about sustainability, Addison said.

New this year, Reno's Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum will be running the event's kids area. The area will feature upcycled crafts to take home and tips on how to be mindful while camping, biking and skiing. Hands-on science experiments will also be taking place throughout the day.

Event organizers work to make the annual celebration a zero-waste event, Addison said. This year's event does not include shredding or electronic-waste collection, he added.

The free event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Village at Squaw Valley. The Village is located at Squaw Valley Road and Village East Road.
