Earth science scholarships available
March 31, 2003
The El Dorado County Mineral and Gem Society is offering a scholarship program to provide scholarships to residents of El Dorado County. Applicants must be pursuing a degree and/or career in earth sciences, lapidary arts or other related fields at an accredited college or university. Eligibility includes El Dorado County high school graduates who currently attend a college outside the county and whose parents still reside in El Dorado County.
The club was established in 1949 to encourage interest in the earth sciences and lapidary arts and hopes that this program will aid in continuing these goals into the future.
Funds for the scholarship are provided by the club from donations it receives for grab bags that its members produce and make available at the El Dorado County Fair. The club’s annual October Rock and Gem Show is also a key fund-raiser for the scholarship program.
Available this year are two $500 scholarships or one $1,000 scholarships. The deadline to apply is April 1 and awards will be announced by May 1.
Students are asked to write an essay about what has motivated them to pursue this career goal, what they hope to achieve and who are their role models.
For applications students can call (530) 676-2472 or visit the Web site at http://www.EldoradoMineralandGem.org/edc-scholarships.html.
