Explorer cadets place in competition
October 12, 2012
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Explorer Post recently took home multiple awards during the Central Coast Explorer Law Enforcement Competition held in Paso Robles, Calif.
The competition was held Sept. 21-23. Fifteen Douglas County Sheriff’s explorers competed against 400 law enforcement explorer cadets from 42 posts from California, Nevada and Arizona. The three-day competition was extremely demanding; testing the mental preparedness, physical endurance and tactical and operational expertise of competing explorer cadets.
Cadets compete in a variety of law enforcement-related scenarios, including felony suspect detainment and arrest, crisis negotiation, vehicle traffic enforcement stops, DUI investigations, vehicle searches, building searches, domestic violence investigations, suspect interview and interrogation, emergency medical aid, patrolling, hazardous response/active gunman and a host of other law enforcement related tasks. Explorer Cadets also compete in individual and team physical agility tests.
The Douglas County sheriff’s explorer cadets took third place overall, first places in team relay and hostage negotiations and fourth places in individual female obstacle course, shooting skills, dui investigation and team obstacle course. The success of the cadets is the culmination of months of extensive training and practical application exercises administered by DCSO Youth Services Officers Chris Griffith and Teresa Duffy, DCSO spokesman Jim Halsey stated in a press release.
The competitors range between 14 and 19 years old. To participate, each must maintain a 2.5 grade point average or above. They train for months to prepare, participate in hundreds of hours of community service and raise all the money to participate in such events. Some community members and businesses also made donations in support of the explorers.
