Man arrested, dog shot in South Lake Tahoe drug bust

One person was arrested and a dog was shot during a drug bust Wednesday on the 1100 block of Martin Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

Joseph Parenteau, 26, was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana for sale and unauthorized cultivating, harvesting and/or processing of marijuana, authorities said.

He was booked into the El Dorado County Jail, but was not listed as an inmate on the jail’s website Friday morning.

The dog, which authorities said attacked a law enforcement agent, lived and was being treated at Sierra Veterinary Hospital as of Friday morning.

Sgt. Matt Underhill of SLEDNET said authorities are still tallying up the amount of drugs confiscated during the bust.

However, he did confirm that marijuana was the only drug recovered in the operation and that it was in both plant and processed form.

The bust occurred about 4 p.m. when SLEDNET agents arrived at the residence to serve a search warrant with a six-person team, he said.

When the resident opened the front door, two dogs came out, Underhill said. Both appeared to be pit bulls, with the larger of the two an apparent pit bull-Rottweiler mix.

The larger dog, which Underhill estimated was about 60 pounds, jumped at an agent and tried to bite him in the arm, he said. Defending himself, the agent reportedly shot the dog near its nose with a .40-caliber sidearm.

“The agent definitely had to defend himself,” Underhill said. “It (the dog) was already up on his arm when he fired.”

Once shot, the dog ran off. Multiple witnesses reported seeing the animal bleeding as it ran east along Highway 50.

The dog, which was not owned by the man arrested in the drug bust, was eventually picked up and taken to the hospital by animal control.

SLEDNET agents arrested the Martin Avenue resident without further incident, Underhill said.
