A small fire ignited in dry grass and brush Sunday evening on West Way.

According to U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Cheva Heck, the fire was reported at 5:50 p.m. Firefighters from USFS, the city of South Lake Tahoe and Lake Valley fire departments responded and contained the fire at one-quarter acre. After that, officials kept an eye on it, but no structures were threatened, Heck said.

South Lake Tahoe resident John Cocores said he lives two streets away from where the fire occurred.

“I smelled burning pine needles,” he said.

Cocores said he was the one who reported the fire and firefighters quickly arrived at the scene.

“They were there really, really fast,” he said. “That could have really been bad.”
