Forest Service rec sites, roads closing for winter

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE – The U.S. Forest Service, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has begun seasonal closures at recreation sites and forest roads. Forest Service road closures are typically completed in mid-November annually. Effective Nov. 15, 2009, Forest Service gates will be closed and locked, and wheeled-motorized access will be prohibited for the winter.

Seasonal road closures allow for winter road maintenance, soil protection and increased public safety.

Although wheeled-motorized access is prohibited during seasonal closures, the public will continue to have non-motorized access, as well as access to snowmobiles where permitted and in accordance with regulations.

Seasonal closures also apply to many recreation sites including beaches, picnic areas and campgrounds. Although gates are closed and locked during seasonal recreation site closures, the public maintains non-motorized access and snowmobile access where permitted under regulations.

Parking facilities, trash and restroom facilities will be closed for the season.

A complete list of closure dates and locations is available online at http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/ltbmu/conditions/closures.shtml.
