A former South Lake Tahoe resident pleaded guilty to a single count of filing a false claim Monday for a 2008 tax return that resulted in a more than $600,000 refund, according to a statement from the Internal Revenue Service.

Gwen Noel Luckett, 59, faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for pleading guilty to the charge in federal court in Fresno. She will also be required to pay restitution as part of the plea.

According to court documents, Luckett filed a fraudulent 2008 tax return in July 2009, claiming excessive federal tax withholding and investment expense. Luckett had failed to file a return for six years before the 2008 returned and received a $605,692 refund from the government, according to a statement from the IRS.

She is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 10.
