June 18, 2010
GENOA – The 90th annual Genoa Candy Dance Arts & Crafts Faire is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 25 and 26. The fair features more than 350 art and craft exhibitors and food vendors, and 4,000 pounds of Genoa’s famous homemade candy. Admission is free. Parking in designated lots is $5.
The Candy Dance dinner and dance is 4-10 p.m. Sept. 25 at Genoa Town Park. Entertainment will by David John & the Comstock Cowboys and Wylie and the Wild West. Dinner dance tickets go on sale July 1 at the Genoa town offices. Cost of $30 includes dinner and the concert. Dance-only tickets are $15.
The first Candy Dance began in 1919 by Genoa resident Lillian Virgin Finnegan to raise money to purchase street lights for the town. Finnegan and the women of Genoa made candy to serve at the dance. The candy making and dance continued each year to raise funds to pay Genoa’s electric bill for the street lights. The Arts and Crafts Faire was added in the 1970s. Funds raised by the town of Genoa during Candy Dance weekend provide a substantial portion of Genoa’s annual budget. A number of the street lights purchased after the first Candy Dance continue to light up the town.
