Service group a good role model
To the editor:
Thank you to the ladies of Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra. You have provided a wonderful summer experience for the mothers and babies of the Young Parents’ Program. Through your generous support the young parents and their babies were able to participate in the Mommy and Me swimming program at the Recreation Department, hike to Angora Lakes and sip ice-cold lemonade, and walk to Camp Richardson on the bike trail, pushing their babies in their new buggy to get ice cream.
Also, by the support received by the morning Soroptimists, we are looking ahead to the fall to a much-anticipated Jazzercizing class. Your loving support has not only enriched the young moms’ summer experience, but has also taught them the value of service in our community. My hope is that each of these girls will grow up understanding the need to give back to their community and maybe become Soroptimists themselves.
Thank you for the powerful example you have shown in their lives.

Not a typical summer camp
To the editor:
During a warm week in July at the Nevada State 4-H Campgrounds in South Lake Tahoe, campers belted out a tune of their own design, little boys gathered wild flowers and assembled colorful bouquets for little girls, and cheeks were dotted with outdoor images.
It was not just another week at summer camp.
For the dozens of children living with neuromuscular diseases in the Nevada area this was a week when hardships were forgotten. Leg braces, surgery, fitting in with other “normal” children at school – all of these worries vanished behind pie-covered faces and a backdrop of lush forest greenery.
It takes $600 to send one child to camp – such a small price for memories of a lifetime. Please remember these children this coming Labor Day weekend when our famous national chairman, Jerry Lewis, will be asking you for donations during the one-and-only MDA Telethon. On behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, thank you for helping make new memories.
