Kudos & Kindness

On Sept. 9, 2007, I went water skiing at Sand Harbor not realizing that I had two crushed cervical discs from a mountain bike accident the week before.

I went unconscious and was face down in the water not breathing when a nearby fisherman – Northstar Fire Capt. Mark Shadowens – jumped in the water to help my wife pull me onto the boat. He called for assistance, and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department showed up minutes later to put me on a stretcher and brace my neck.

The Incline Fire Department – battalion chief Michael Schwartz’s crew – called Care Flight and met us at the boat dock, where they offered medical attention, comforted my wife and loaded up my boat. I was at Renown Medical Center 38 minutes later thanks to the cooperation of four different agencies.

I have both feet above the ground thanks to these special professionals.

I was surfing the Net looking for information on the Lake in the Sky air show, which was held last Saturday, when I was delighted to see your cover story and photo.

The pilot in the photo showing the little boy how to fly the CH 53 was my son, Lt. Nolan P. Duchateau.

I talked with Nolan on Sunday night after the air show, and he said that he and his crew had a great time. The people and the community were simply wonderful. He was quite impressed with the event.

Thanks for putting a smile on a dad’s face.
