Lake Tahoe Grizzlies start season strong

The PeeWee and Squirt youth hockey teams opened with wins Oct. 13-14.

The PeeWees, who turned in stellar preseason play to earn a new A classification, picked up wins against the Cupertino, Calif., Cougars and Redwood City, Calif.

Cameron Johnson and Mickey Sullivan led the PeeWees in scoring and goalie Nick Ilvento kept the Cougars down to one goal for a final score of 2-1 Grizzlies win.

In Sunday’s game, the Grizzlies’ Lucas Demsar led the scoring with two goals assisted by Zach Dill. Tucker Cannon and Sullivan added a goal apiece for a final score of 4-2 in the Grizzlies win.

The Squirts started the weekend off slow with a loss to the Cupertino Cougars who raced away to big margin win of 9-2. Grizzlies’ scorers were Quinn Proctor and Wallace Sonntag with assists by Tommy Yarbrough and Johnny Ilvento.

Oakland proved a better venue for the Grizzlies as the team beat the Oakland Bears 8-2. Jason Trio put the first goal on the board for the Grizzlies. The Squirts racked up four goals in the first period. Offensive player Adin Burns added two goals. Other scorers included Quinlin Clark, Olin Silverman, Sonntag and Proctor.

The Grizzlies Bantam team played an exhibition game against the Oakland Bears Saturday coming away with a tie 2-2. The Bantams won Sunday, 2-1, in an exhibition game against the Santa Clara Blackhawks.

The Grizzlies play their next season games at their home rink, South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena, Nov. 3-4. The hockey games are free and open to the public. Games start off with the Squirts at 1:45 p.m. with the PeeWees and Bantam teams following. The Grizzlies PeeWees will also be playing two exhibition games Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. and Oct. 28 at 8:30 a.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.
