Local athletes represent in marathon weekend

Athletes of all levels hit the Tahoe streets and waters last weekend in the 17th annual Lake Tahoe Marathon.

The weekend event drew athletes from all around the world, but they were not to be outdone by the South Shore locals who came out and represented across the board at all events. Locals finished in the top 10 of nearly every event the weekend had to offer.

Running one marathon is impressive, but local Kang Lee completed three. Lee charged around the lake in back-to-back-to-back marathons spread over three days.

Out in the water, South Shore locals Matthew Williams, Simon Norton and Frank Kovac all finished in the top five of the 5K kayak.

On the paddleboard front, Joe Santalla took first in the 2-meter race, and Vicki Marotti came in third. Merick Rickman finished second in the 5-meter paddleboard race.

South Tahoe’s Kevin Willitts turned in a top 10 performance on the 72-mile bike ride around the lake. Willitts breezed in just before the three-hour mark with a time of 2:59. Matthew Williams took fifth in the 35-mile bike race with a time of 1:53.
