As a way to brighten the weekend and highlight its services, Tahoe Youth & Family Services will host its first-ever Color Blast 5K Run Saturday morning at Lake Tahoe Community College.
A color blast is an event with colored, non-toxic cornstarch with which people can cover themselves and each other. The sticky texture turns a normally bland person into a chromatic complexion. The main idea of spreading splashes of varied vividness comes from India's Holi Festival of Colors, a celebration of good triumphing over evil, according to http://www.holifestival.org.
Tahoe Youth & Family Services director Alissa Nourse said she had been to a color blast run previously and decided Tahoe could use a little lighting up.
"We think it aligns with our mission, being that it's a family event," Nourse said. "You don't have to be a runner, and it promotes a healthy lifestyle. I had been to a couple and thought they were really fun, and they weren't happening in Tahoe."
Nourse said the funds collected from the event will benefit the core services the organization provides, such as counseling, substance abuse treatment and prevention, mentoring and supportive services for runaway homeless and high-risk youth.
As far as how many people are expected to show up, Nourse said she has no frame of reference to guestimate.
"It's hard to say because our registrations have tripled in the past two days, and it's been overwhelming," she said. "The smoke (from the Rim Fire) cleared. It's beautiful weather, and people are ready to celebrate fall."
Registration can take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the services office today or the day of the event at the community college. The race will start Saturday at 9 a.m., with registration at 8 a.m., and will feature a colorful 5K, followed by food, drinks and live music fun for the whole family.
Registration costs $50 for adults, $30 for children 11 to 17 years old, and $10 for children 10 and younger. There will be free bike parking at the event, and Nourse said she encourages people to ride their bikes, "so we can all leave throughout the town in our colors."
Costumes are welcome, but pets are not.
Nourse said people should show up wearing all white to enhance the colorful effects. The 5K run will not be timed.
