Ice skating camp brings Olympians to South Tahoe
May 23, 2014
Adults from around the country were twisting, gliding and dancing at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena on Friday as part of the third annual High Sierra Adult Skating Camp.
The five-day camp is held to give adults of all skill levels an opportunity to improve their ice skating abilities at about 6,237 feet above sea level.
"We get to learn alongside some of the people that struggle from some of the same things we do," said Elizabeth Ozorak, who came from Pennsylvania to participate in the program.
This year's ice skating camp drew in 28 registered participants from across the country, including Arizona, Hawaii, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Alaska, Oregon, North Lake Tahoe and Truckee.
Becky Langford, a participant of the program and resident of Santa Fe, N.M., said many people just come to get on the ice.
"A lot of people come here because they don't get the chance to skate otherwise," she said.
Freestyle and daily dance sessions are available at the camp, and coaches are present to help attendees improve their routines.
Coaches include Peter Sasmore, a professional figure skating instructor with 25 years teaching experience; Charles Tickner, a four-time U.S. National Champion, a 1978 World Champion and 1980 Olympic Bronze Medalist; and John Dowding and Lorna Wighton Aldridge, who as dance partners are three-time Canadian Champions and participated in the 1980 Olympics.
Karen Viel, organizer of the event, said the camp is setup in a way that everyone has a chance to work with a coach.
"We're really trying to cater to everyone," she said.
The program has grown significantly since its inception three years ago, Viel said. For more information on the camp, visit highsierraadultskatecamp.wordpress.com.
