Santa ditched his sleigh for a fire truck decked in Christmas lights Friday, when he dropped in for the third annual Meyer’s Tree Lighting celebration.

The jolly Christmas legend made his appearance in front of a crowd of about 75 people, who were battling the cold wind and snow.

Temperatures stuck around 20 degrees, but visitors stayed warm with hot chocolate and popcorn. Christmas music was also playing to harness holiday cheer.

The event, organized by the Meyers Community Foundation, was held at the Divided Sky bar and restaurant, where more than 10,000 lights were used to illuminate a tree about 100 feet tall.

“It’s kind of the beacon from the top of Echo Summit,” said Dr. Joshua Welch, a member of the Foundation, “so it’s pretty cool.”

Danielle Hughes was at the event with her 9-year-old son, Ethan, who had the chance to sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what he wanted for Christmas. Hughes said it was their way of starting off the Christmas countdown.

“We just came here to see Santa and drink hot cocoa,” she said.

Snow started hitting the Meyers area heavily by the time Santa’s fire truck arrive, but kids seemed to excited to worry about the weather.

It’s that sense of coming together as a community, even in rough weather, that really speaks to the foundation of the event, organizer Rene Brejc said.

“Our whole objective is to create the sense of community in Meyers,” she said.
