This map shows the project area for an upcoming mastication project.

A project will begin near Page Meadows off of Chamonix Road on the northwest shore of Lake Tahoe on Sept. 8 to reduce material left behind from forest thinning.

The mastication project involves using heavy equipment to run over debris and chop it up into smaller pieces. During the process, debris can be thrown up to 500 feet.

About 375 feet of the Tahoe Rim Trail is in the project area, and there will be a one- to three-day period when equipment will be working near the trail, according to the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

Hikers may experience a short delay until equipment is stopped for safe passage.

The project is expected to take about six weeks to complete with work occurring on weekends.
