Middle school hoops hold strong

The South Tahoe seventh grade boys basketball team ground out an 18-16 win against Carson Valley at home Thursday.

“It was unbelievable,” head coach Tim Parsons said. “My little guys came in there and played a guy as big as me. Our mantra was ‘Let’s shock the world’.”

South Tahoe certainly shocked Carson Valley with the midseason turnaround performance. Was this the same team they beat 29-13 just 16 days earlier?

The Vikings outscored Carson 7-2 in the fourth quarter.

Brian Schoten tied the game at 16-16 from the free throw line. Then, with 26 seconds left on the clock, Oscar Herrera made a running 15-footer for nothing but net.

South Tahoe then went to work on defense. Khale Lexa and Brian Catchings double teamed Carson Valley’s big guy to hold onto the win as they ate up clock.

“It’s all about defense, and we played so well on defense,” Parsons said. “The bench was great cheering us on.”

Tim Cain and Christian Tovar rounded out South Tahoe’s stellar defense. Tovar also led the team with six points.

Rick Chandler, who coached the likes of Jeremy Lin and Tom Brady, took a break from his Palo Alto High School coaching gig to serve as assistant coach for the game.
