Mighty Mites and Tiny Mites

- Tribune staff report

The Mighty Mites made it happen against Sparks at South Tahoe High School, defeating the Saints 13-6 Saturday. The team had standout performances from Jake Tarwater Jeremy Smiley, Derek Robbins, Reece Okeefe, who came up with eight tackles for yards lost. The defense put up a wall led by Malachi Womack, Zackary Klug and Trenten Schouten.

The Tiny Mites made waves Saturday as well taking on the Reno Wolf Pack. Joel Gomez put up five touchdowns, four rushing, in the afternoon. Quarterback Garrett Friederici had a great game, connecting with Gomez for one of his five TDs. Other standout performances were seen from Zander Ladonte, Ryan Britt and Andre Smith.

“We played with a lot of heart. We had 14 kids and I think the other team had 21 kids out there,” coach Joel Gomez Sr. said. “Last year, we only scored four touchdowns all season, so five in the first game was awesome.”
