Mighty Mites push through playoffs

The South Tahoe Mighty Mites opened the playoffs with a resounding 20-6 win over a top-ranked Sparks team Friday on the road.

“Our kids are really on a roll. They are executing very complex plays for this level of football and are confusing and dominating their opponents,” head coach Thomas O’Keefe said in an email.

“On offense, Jake Tarwater found the endzone three times, and completed several long passes to Zackary Klug and Malachi Womack. Our offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage the entire game behind the strong blocking of Jace Kezer, Isaiah Daley, Reece O’Keefe, Aiden Rippet, Hayden Waters and Trenton Schouten.

“On defense, Eric Toner, Zakary Degischer, Justin Vinson and Jake Whisnant all played strong along the defensive line. However, our defense was anchored by our veteran players Derek Robbins at defensive end, Womack at left corner, Tarwater at middle linebacker, Jeremy Smiley at left linebacker, Klug at right linebacker and Reece O’Keefe at left defensive tackle. O’Keefe came up with a crucial fumble recovery to shutdown a late drive by the Steelers.”

The Mighty Mites continue into the second round of the playoffs Saturday at 11 a.m. at South Tahoe High School.
