My Echo Story: Bijou Community School
October 17, 2012
Bijou Community School is truly a community school. Besides educating more than 500 elementary aged students each year, we also host the Boys and Girls Club every day after school and open our doors to community families and organizations continuously.
Bijou has a spirit among our students, staff and family that is rarely found, despite more than half of our students receiving free and reduced-cost breakfasts and lunches.
In the past five years, major changes have happened at Bijou thanks to the huge parent and teacher volunteer force (more than 6,000 hours were logged last year) and the community support provided by Vail Resorts Echo, Barton Health Foundation, El Dorado Community Foundation, Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe, Bessie Minor Charitable Fund, Parasol, Big George Ventures, the Bijou PTA and Lake Tahoe Unified School District.
The epitome of the change at Bijou is seen in our new “Field of Dreams.” Over the last two years, with the support of many of the above mentioned organizations, the former 50,000+ square-foot dirt lot that acted as a playground has been converted to a huge grassy field, a picnic area and an exercise circuit course. This field with trees, boulders and picnic tables is loved for sports, games, picnicking, reading a book or just socializing with friends. Beyond benefiting the community at large, creating a park-like setting on campus has fostered a positive, healthy area for students to spend their recess time as well as their after school time. Thank you to all community members and organizations who have contributed to improving the lives of Bijou students.
