New and used sporting equipment available

Tim Cain is more than a typical sports dad. Taking inspiration from his family, he has embarked on a business venture.

Cain runs The Athlete — the type of store that caters to the sports-minded.

He watched his 16-year-old son, Jake, grow up in sports, and involved himself whenever the opportunity arose. With his 5-year-old son, Mason, ready to start his sports career, Cain was not about to go through the same ordeal he did with his older son when it came to finding the required sporting equipment. Frequent trips to Carson City, Reno, or even Sacramento were inconvenient. So on April 1 — The Athlete opened its doors.

Cain and his wife, Kristi, run the place, while their two boys help out when they can. A South Lake Tahoe resident for 30 years, Cain plans on keeping the store seasonal specific, focusing on baseball and softball, with soccer and volleyball equipment on deck.

Uniforms, bats, balls, and cleats line the shelves. For the frugal shopper, used equipment is also available. He said his prices are competitive with those found off the hill.

Cain’s store is geared toward teams and individual players, youths and adult. The goal is to equip everyone from head to toe.

“If you walk in the door and you don’t see it, I can usually get it within three days,” Cain said.

The Athlete also offers silk-screening and embroidering for uniforms, and will deliver just about anything when needed. Cain plans on expanding his business online, but is going to focus on the brick and mortar before going virtual.

“There’s only one of me … I’m never not here,” he said.

He promises one-on-one service at The Athlete. He’s already filling orders for Babe Ruth and Little League teams.

The Athlete is located at 2227 James Ave., No. 3B, behind the Kings Trading Post Center. It’s open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The store can be reached at (530) 541-8326.
