Obit — Carolyn Kelly Ryan

Tahoe Daily Tribune

Carolyn Kelly Ryan of Orangevale died suddenly on Thursday, February 13, 2003 of undetermined causes. Carolyn was born at San Diego Naval Hospital to Lillie and George Cornelius on August 18, 1944, her mother’s birthday. Her childhood was spent in the Alameda and Oakland areas of the San Francisco Bay Area. She graduated from San Lorenzo High School in 1962. Carolyn was one of the original Oakland Raiderettes in the early 1960s when the team was still at Frank Youell Field.

Carolyn moved with her son, David, and husband, John D. Kelly, a peace officer, to South Lake Tahoe, California in 1973. John Kelly succumbed to cancer in 1977. Carolyn worked for Pacific Telephone and was a teacher’s aide at the local elementary school. She was active in a variety of community groups and president of the local chapter of the Christian Women’s Club.

In June of 1980, Carolyn married William P. Ryan, an engineer for the Lahontan Regional Water Board. Carolyn and Bill had two more sons, John, born in1980, and James, born in1982, and with their oldest son, David Kelly, lived for many years on Tahoe Island Drive.

Carolyn dearly loved the Lake Tahoe area; the forests, snow and lake were her comfort when her first husband died and her joy when she remarried and had other children. She immersed herself always in church, community, schools and family and was inherently a personality that drew others into her sphere of activity.

Carolyn is survived by a loving family that includes her mother, Lillie Cornelius; three sons, David Kelly, John Ryan and James Ryan; three brothers; a host of friends and extended family; and Bill Ryan, her husband of nearly 23 years. She shall be greatly missed, but her beauty and kindness will grace our lives for as long as there is caring love in the world.

There will be a funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 19, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church located at 307 Montrose Drive, Folsom. A reception will immediately follow the Mass in the church hall. Interment will be a ceremony for family and friends on Friday, February 21, at 11:00 a.m. at Happy Homestead Cemetery, Al Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe — the place Carolyn loved so dearly. Paul Nelson, Family Options Tribute Service, is coordinating funeral arrangements and may be reached at (530) 544-1424.
