Memorial services were conducted Feb. 8 for Harry W. Winchell, who died Feb. 2, 2003, at his home in South Lake Tahoe. He was 81.

Mr. Winchell was born Nov. 11, 1921, at Berlin, Conn., and graduated from Berlin High School in 1938. He was the senior class president and also won the school’s most coveted award for citizenship. He went on to complete four years of college. He married Rachel Parlin Feb. 16, 1943, and they had three children before moving to Southern California in 1956, where their fourth child was born at Torrance, Calif.

Mr. Winchell was a design engineer for the aircraft industry before retiring in 1984. In 1986 he and his wife moved to South Lake Tahoe and bought a home to spend their retirement years. He was an avid gardener and could be seen watching over his crops every day, amazing people with what he could grow at this altitude. He was a talented pianist and also enjoyed painting with oils on large canvases. He always kept track of what was going on with his family and could be counted on to know the latest news.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel Winchell of South Lake Tahoe; son, George Winchell of Gardena, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Gary Kunce, and grandsons Garrett Kunce and David Zuber of South Lake Tahoe; daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Larry Coshow, granddaughter, Suzanne Coshow and grandson, Ernie Coshow of Huntington Beach, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Sherie Winchell, granddaughter, Sharleen Winchell and grandson, Robert Winchell of Torrance, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Daniel Fagan Zuber of Carson City, Nev., Amanda Zuber of Lenore, Idaho, and Brittany Zuber of South Lake Tahoe.

Memorial services took place Feb. 8 at McFarlane Mortuary Chapel and private interment was at Happy Homestead Cemetery.

Arrangements were by McFarlane Mortuary.
